ADELPHI ACRE IN THE COMMUNITY: CUMC FOOD PANTRY

GIVING

Giving back and being part of the wider community has been ingrained in the mission of Adelphi Acre Community Garden since its inception and we are proud supporters of the Covenant United Methodist Food Bank. As participants of the SFC's Spread the Harvest program, we set aside a portion of the harvest from our garden to donate to local food banks in need of local, unprocessed foods.

Every Wednesday we deliver produce to the food bank which happens to be in close proximity to the garden. We have two 10'x20' plots dedicated solely to producing organic veggies and herbs for this food pantry. These beds are planted, maintained and harvested by garden members who volunteer to be on our Donation Team. Much of the produce from the Children's Teaching Garden also serves the food bank as well. In addition, garden members frequently donate surplus from their individual plots. All of this adds up to be a significant amount of fresh produce. Over the past year and a half AACG has provided on average of over 40 lbs. a month of fresh organic veggies such as Swiss chard, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, peppers, onions, lettuce, carrots and more. Fresh veggies are a highly valued item according to those who serve at the food pantry.

The Covenant food bank serves approximately 100 households per week so the time and resources we pour into this work provides the option to have fresh, local produce for many families in our community.
